Exterior renovationsWhat Are the Ideal Painting Project Conditions?
Are you about to undertake a renovation project? Apart from having the appropriate tools on hand and the help you will need to complete your project in a timely manner, you will also have to take into account the temperature and weather.
In fact, these last two factors will greatly impact the positive or negative outcome of your project. Here’s everything you need to know about the ideal conditions to carry out your renovations!
Before undertaking outdoor painting work, you need to know that paint will not be able to dry at a temperature below 5 degrees. Ideally, we advise you to wait until the temperature reaches at least 10 degrees before you start applying it.
That being said, it must be said that you can still paint when the temperature is between 0 and 5 degrees. To do this, you will need to use a special type of paint which is intended for such a purpose. Don’t hesitate to seek professional advice to determine the type of paint you need. Are you painting your porch? Know that its wood will have to dry for at least 48 hours before applying another product on the surface.
What about the maximum temperature not to exceed? In that respect and generally speaking, we recommend avoiding painting outside when the temperature exceeds 30 degrees. On that subject, it should be noted that the majority of water-based paints can be used up to that temperature. However, beyond 20 degrees, the application of paint could become more difficult given that it will dry really quickly (depending on the humidity in the air).
It’s worth noting that the temperature limit not to exceed may vary from one brand to another. Therefore, it’s better to ask for a lot of information when buying paint to be sure to get your hands on the right type of product.
In addition, know that you should paint in the shade or during non-sunny weather. Here’s why many suggest painting in the evening. This is of great importance, especially for paint that is applied on wood or on pieces of masonry. With that in mind, why not paint in the morning? Simply because there’s a risk for the paint to dry too quickly at this moment, which could lead to the development of bubbles on the surface.
Next, let's talk about painting in wet weather. From the outset, it must be said that this is clearly not the ideal context. Indeed, the more humid the temperature gets and the more time your paint will take to dry. Although you could still complete your project during such circumstances, it’s mostly discouraged to do so.
Indeed, the indications about the drying time on paint containers don’t take into account an abnormally high humidity level (which means higher than 80%). If your project has already begun, wait for the humidity levels to come down below that level and let the surface dry for at least half a day before completing your project. On the other hand, the same waiting period is required if heavy rain has occurred.
Although it’s unlikely that you would want to do so, know that it’s not a good idea to paint when it is raining. Furthermore, it would be wiser not to undertake a painting project if rain is expected in the next 48 hours.
With regards to painting during windy weather, it’s best to avoid it. Indeed, the wind will dry the paint far too quickly. In addition, let’s remember that it’s highly probable that dust and other little particles will get stuck on the undried surface.

Now, what about painting indoors? Popular knowledge suggests painting at temperatures located between 10 and 20 degrees.
If the temperature exceeds 20 degrees, your paint will dry too quickly and this will make its application more complicated. Additionally, the final result could be disappointing, as paint roller or brush marks may be more visible. Although it’s unlikely that the indoor temperature in your house is below 10 degrees, make sure you heat up the room until it reaches 20 degrees before you start applying the paint.
When you’re painting indoors, be aware that it’s best to do so when the humidity level in the room is below 40%. If you must work when the humidity level is higher (between 40% and 80%), be sure to increase the drying time between the two layers. It would be wiser to let the paint dry for at least half a day between two layers.
Although this is not a measure that is usually thought of from the outset, it’s recommended to vacuum before you start painting and to avoid the presence of drafts while working. Complying with these two guidelines will prevent dust from landing on the freshly painted surface.
Keep in mind that not following these recommendations can have great consequences. If you decide to paint in rainy weather when the humidity level is high, it’s likely that you will see chipping, streaks or even black marks.
It should be noted that cracking can take one or two years to occur. Whether you’re working indoors or outdoors, avoid painting at all costs and wait for the good weather to return!
