Ce n’est pas d’hier que date l’intérêt tout naturel que l’on porte aux meubles ou aux boiseries faites sur mesure. À la fois uniques et originales, leur fabrication demande un savoir-faire que seul un ébéniste possède.
L’ébénisterie en bref : des classiques européens à la modernité
Depuis les débuts de la colonie jusqu’en 1870, la production de meubles n’était pas la chasse gardée des ébénistes, elle était plutôt partagée entre ceux-ci, les menuisiers et les charpentiers.
En 1935, ouvre enfin L’École du meuble de Montréal. Cette institution marque l’essor de l’ébénisterie et sa professionnalisation sous la direction de grands noms tels qu’Alfred Pellan, Charles Daudelin et Marcelle Ferron. L’apport théorique de ces derniers, principalement en poste entre 1937 et 1945, permet aux métiers d’art de prendre leur envol et de s’épanouir jusque dans les années 50.
Le processus de création de votre meuble
Un ébéniste se charge de la création de votre meuble du début à la fin. Prenant soin d’élaborer le design de la pièce avec vous, il vous consultera également pour le choix des matériaux afin que ceux-ci conviennent à votre budget. Nulle crainte donc que la matière première de votre nouveau meuble ne fasse fondre vos économies !
Le choix d’une essence de bois et son influence sur le prix
Les essences de bois employées par les ébénistes sont nombreuses, ce qui vous permet de bénéficier d’une palette de choix bien généreuse : chêne, érable, noyer, merisier, etc. Bien entendu, ce choix aura une influence sur le prix de votre nouvelle acquisition. La rareté du bois, de même que sa qualité (évaluée en fonction de la présence plus ou moins importante de nœuds) seront déterminantes dans le prix final.
Réaliser votre projet par vous-même
Vous êtes bricoleur et pensez réduire le coût de fabrication en réalisant vous-même votre projet ? Bien que ce ne soit pas impossible, il est bon de savoir que les compétences requises pour mener votre projet à terme sont plus que nombreuses : placage, cintrage, sculptage, assemblage, usinage des pièces, réalisation de plans, etc. La liste est longue et justifie largement la nécessité pour les ébénistes de suivre une formation pour exercer leur métier.
Également, si vous avez besoin de vous faire un trousseau, vous devrez vous procurer un grand nombre d’outils : machine stationnaire, perceuse à colonne, planeuse, scie à onglets, ponceuse à bande et bien d’autres encore.
